Youngest Female Deputy Mayor In The Country at 27

6 November 2008

In May this year, at the age of 27, I was elected Deputy Mayor for the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead. This set two records; firstly I became the youngest female deputy mayor in the country and secondly, along with the Mayor Mrs Kemp, we were the first ‘all female duo at the top’ in the borough’s history.

There is no true ‘typical’ day in the life of a deputy mayor, due to the large variety of invitations received; I have opened village fetes, attended charity balls, awarded prizes for the ‘Duke of Edinburgh Awards’ and School ‘President Days’, been involved in citizenship ceremonies, participated in charity walks, chaired meetings, even visited Buckingham Palace and had the great honour of taking the Salute for the ‘Remembrance Sunday’ service.

Most memorably, I have been overwhelmed by the vast number of people who selflessly dedicate their spare time to helping those who are less fortunate in our society, be it through charities or other organisations.

However, it has not all been plain-sailing. When originally nominated as Deputy Mayor, I was met with much opposition from more experienced councillors who felt that I had not yet earned the right to represent the Borough.

Thankfully my peers continued to support me and since starting the role, I have been met with an unprecedented level of support from everyone I have met in the Borough, who comment on how refreshing it is to see someone of my age taking an interest in the local community and challenging political stereotypes.

In conclusion, I truly hope that my limited experience will energise other young women to join the political arena and help change the ‘face of politics’.

Making a dream come true!
As a child, who did you dream of becoming? A scientist who would find the cure for cancer? A teacher who would mold young lives? A fireman who would rescue people from burning buildings? I dreamed of becoming a politician who would build a better future for our children.
